The story

Some Filipinos say that a man named Agapito Flores invented the fluorescent lamp. The story often adds that the lamp took its name from his surname, because "Flores" sounds like "fluorescent". The name match is the main "proof" that people give.

The story is best treated as an urban legend. The Wikipedia list of Filipino inventions says it found no evidence for the claim. It gives no birth date, no place and no patent for Flores. It also puts the lamp among popular claims that some textbooks and social media posts repeat as fact, to show pride in Filipino skill. One television feature, GMA News "Ang Pinaka" (17 October 2014), is cited as a source for the retelling.

The word "fluorescent" comes from the physical effect called fluorescence, not from a person's name. Lighting histories credit engineers in Europe and the United States for the lamp. It is not known if a person named Agapito Flores ever worked on lamps. The claim is a modern folk belief, not the history of an invention.
