The story
Bungisngis is a giant with one eye in the middle of his forehead. His name probably comes from the Cebuano word for giggling, and the creature is known for laughing all the time. People describe him with huge teeth that always show, a top lip that flops over his face when his head tips back, and two long tusks. With only one eye, he is said to make up for it with sharp hearing.
Stories place him in several parts of the country. Writers list Orion and Bataan, Batangas and a place called Meluz. He is very strong. In a folk tale of three friends, a monkey, a dog and a carabao, the giant lifts a carabao and hurls it. The animal sinks into the soil up to its knees. Still, he is not clever. In that tale, he is outwitted and panics.
Most modern retellings use him as a comic giant for children. No old record of a belief in him is known.
