Tambaloslos
In Bikol, Visayan and Mindanao lore, the tambaloslos is a small, ugly forest creature with a huge mouth and thick lips. Stories say it leads travelers astray so they walk in circles. To escape, you make it laugh until its lips cover its eyes.
Folklore is retold; versions differ.

The story
Tellers in Bikol, the Visayas and Mindanao describe the tambaloslos as a short forest creature. One Bikol account says it stands only about two feet tall. Its looks are part of the joke: a very wide mouth with heavy lips, and a crude, oversized body that folk tellers describe openly. Some Bikol tellers say its mouth opens so wide that the whole face seems to fold back.
Its trick is to make people lose their way. A traveler on a forest trail suddenly cannot find the path and walks in circles. The cure in the story is laughter. The lost person does something shameless and silly, in some tellings taking off their clothes, and the creature laughs so hard that its big lips flop up over its eyes. While it cannot see, the traveler slips away and finds the right path again.
In Cebuano the word is also a rough insult for a useless or shameless person. Written sources on the creature are thin: a short Bikol Wikipedia article and dictionary entries. No old field record of these stories is known, so details change from place to place.
