A dormant volcano that stands over the city, known also as Mount Asog after a Negrito chieftain, and in older records as Sumagang, the mountain of the rising sun.

It erupted on 4 January 1641 and opened a deep gully on the side towards Buhi, ending in the steep gorge that was the crater. The volcanic soil at its foot made Iriga a major producer of abaca in Bicol from the middle of the 19th century into the early 20th.
