Dalton Pass

no rating yet ♥ 0

A zigzag mountain road that joins Nueva Ecija to Nueva Vizcaya, in the town of Santa Fe. It carries the Cagayan Valley Road section of the Pan-Philippine Highway, also called the Maharlika Highway, and the pass is also known as Balete Pass.

The summit is around 910 metres up, where the Caraballo Sur range meets the Sierra Madre. Japanese and American troops fought here through the last months of the Second World War, and the pass takes its name from Brigadier General James Dalton II, whom a sniper killed in the battle. A tourism complex at the top holds the national shrine declared in 2016, monuments put up by the Chinese and the Japanese, and a viewpoint with a shed that looks out over the mountains and forest. Drivers should take care: the hairpin curves and the steep gradient caused 541 recorded accidents in 2017.
