Candaba Swamp
A wetland of about 32,000 hectares of freshwater ponds, marshes and seasonally flooded grassland, 60 kilometres northeast of Manila. The whole area goes under water in the wet season, and it works as a flood basin for five smaller rivers that drain from here into the Pampanga River.
From November to April the water falls and the bed dries out. Farmers then plant watermelon and rice on it, among patches of nipa palm and mangrove. The swamp crosses the boundary of Pampanga and Bulacan.
