Calapan Cathedral
The city's cathedral, dedicated to the Santo Niño, the patron of Calapan. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts has marked it as a historical structure, and it is the seat of the Diocese of Calapan. Augustinian Recollects founded the parish in 1679, and repeated Moro raids turned the compound into a fortified settlement with defensive walls and watchtowers. A raid in 1754 carried off the parish priest and several people who had taken shelter inside. Fire destroyed the church and convent in 1881 along with all the parish records, and the present cathedral was finished in 1962.
Saint Ezekiel Moreno served in the parish from 1872, long before his canonisation. The Santo Niño de Calapan Festival honours the same patron. It runs from December to New Year's Day with processions, liturgies, concerts, trade fairs and street dancing.
