San Pedro Macati Church

no rating yet ♥ 1

The mother church of Makati, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul and standing in Poblacion, the old heritage barangay. In front of the facade is Plaza Cristo Rey, which used to be the San Pedro de Macati cemetery. The National Museum of the Philippines declared the church an Important Cultural Property in 2023.

The British destroyed the church in 1762, and it was rebuilt in 1849 with stone from Guadalupe in Makati and Meycauayan in Bulacan. It follows the Baroque style, one rectangular nave with the original carved reredos of flowers and fruits. The church holds La Virgen de la Rosa, an ivory image brought from Mexico by galleon in 1718. Its head and hands were stolen during the Philippine Revolution and were replaced in wood. The parish keeps two feast days, June 29 for Peter and Paul and June 30 for the Virgen de la Rosa, when it performs the Panatang Sayaw, or Dance of the Arches, a custom from the early 19th century.
