Manila American Cemetery

no rating yet ♥ 1

A military cemetery for the United States personnel killed in the Philippines in the Second World War, and for the dead of other allied nations. The American Battle Monuments Commission manages it. It sits at the northeast end of Lawton Avenue, the main road through Fort Bonifacio.

There are 17,206 graves, more than any other cemetery for United States dead of that war. The headstones are Lasa marble, set in eleven plots in a broad circle among tropical trees. Inside the memorial, twenty-five mosaic maps in four rooms trace the fighting in the Pacific, China, India and Burma, and the seals of the American states are carved into the floors. Twenty-nine holders of the Medal of Honor are buried or named here. The cemetery opens daily from 9 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon, and closes on December 25 and January 1.
