Polo Church

no rating yet ♥ 4

The oldest church in the city, dedicated to San Diego de Alcala. Father Juan Taranco began it and Father Jose Valencia finished it in 1632. The Second World War destroyed the building, and the belfry that survived is the oldest in Valenzuela. The church stands about 15.5 kilometres north of Manila.

Bombs took the main structure and the parish records during the Japanese occupation. The belfry and the entrance are all that is left of the old church, and a new one has been built next to the ruins. The parish belongs to the Diocese of Malolos. Polo and Poblacion keep the feast of San Diego de Alcala on November 12, together with the Putong Polo Festival, which honours the putong Polo, the local kind of puto, a rice cake.
