The city's grand mosque, also called the Islamic Center of Marawi, and the biggest Islamic place of worship in the country: it holds 20,000 worshippers. It stands in Pangarungan Village.
The site's landowner, Datu Pangarungan Disalongan, led the first phase of the work, which started in the 1950s and finished in 1970. Militants of the Maute group took the mosque in the siege of Marawi in May 2017, and the fighting left it heavily damaged. Task Force Bangon Marawi rebuilt it by October 2021. The mosque now has three floors and a basement over 9,434 square metres, against 2,500 square metres and room for 5,000 people before the siege. A madrasa and a library share the building.
