The largest lake in Mindanao and the deepest in the Philippines: 340 square kilometres of water in the interior of the province. It is one of the 15 ancient lakes in the world, and scholars are pushing for its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The people who live around it take their name from it. Maranao means the people living around the lake, and the province is known as their land.
