The seat of the Diocese of Surigao, on a parish that Augustinian Recollect friars founded in 1754. Its full name is San Nicolas de Tolentino Cathedral, after the patron whose feast on September 10 the city keeps with the Bonok-Bonok Maradjao Karadjao Festival.
The Catholic mission in this area first sat on Siargao and moved to Surigao after Moro raids on the island. Secular priests ran the parish in the early 19th century, then the Augustinian Recollects and the Jesuits, then the Benedictines from 1901. The church became the cathedral in 1939, when the diocese was created. Bombing in World War II destroyed the earlier building and its records, and the present church was built in 1988.
