Caraga Church

no rating yet ♥ 2

A stone and wooden church built in the Spanish period to serve as the mission station for the eastern side of Mindanao. The Jesuits took the parish over from the Augustinian Recollects in 1871 and began the building in 1877. It was finished in 1884 and dedicated to San Salvador del Mundo, Christ the Saviour of the World.

The town around it was established in 1861 and is one of the oldest in Davao Oriental. The building uses tisa made from processed shells off the Caraga shore, and the ground floor of the convento served at times as a prison cell under Spanish rule.
