Lake Apo
A green crater lake of about 24 hectares in the hills west of the city, with water up to 26 metres deep. In the late 1990s it was named the cleanest inland body of water in the Northern Mindanao region.
It sits in Barangay Guinoyoran at about 640 metres elevation, roughly 11 kilometres west southwest of the city proper. The basin is an old volcanic cone that later filled with water, and other volcanic peaks stand close by: Musuan Peak 7 kilometres to the east and a small cone 2 kilometres to the southwest. The name comes from the Bisaya word apo, elder or grandparent, after a legend about a man whom the mountain deities punished by flooding the place.
