Chocolate Hills

no rating yet ♥ 73

Over a thousand grass-covered limestone mounds that turn brown in the dry season, seen from the deck at Carmen. Counts run from 1,260 hills to more than 1,776, scattered across the towns of Carmen, Batuan and Sagbayan over more than 50 square kilometres. Most stand 30 to 50 metres high, and the largest reaches 120 metres. They are conical karst: marine limestone cut by rain and groundwater after tectonic uplift, with flat plains, caves and springs between them.

The hills are the country's third national geological monument, and they appear on the provincial flag and seal. The deck is the government-owned Chocolate Hills Complex, about 55 kilometres from Tagbilaran. Sagbayan Peak, 18 kilometres away, is the other viewing point.
