Bakhawan Eco-Park

no rating yet ♥ 1

A 220 hectare mangrove forest grown on what used to be the muddy shoreline of Barangay New Buswang. A bamboo trail of 1.3 kilometres takes you deep into the trees, past a watchtower, picnic huts, a souvenir shop and a Center for International Mangrove Studies. The forest holds several mangrove species and shelters birds and marine life.

The local government and several non-government groups began planting it in 1990 to hold back floods and storm surges, and it is known as the country's most successful mangrove reforestation project. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization named it one of the exemplary managed forests of Asia and the Pacific. Bakhawan is the local word for mangrove. The Kalibo Save the Mangroves Association runs the park.
