About Batanes
Ivatan houses have limestone walls a metre thick and cogon roofs, because the typhoons up here arrive with nothing in the way to slow them down. Batanes is the smallest province in the country by both people and land, and almost as close to Taiwan as to the Luzon mainland: 190 kilometres from one, 162 from the other. Basco, on Batan island, is the capital.
