Cape Engaño Lighthouse

no rating yet ♥ 3

A hilltop lighthouse on Palaui Island, at the northern end of Luzon. It stands 92 metres above the sea and the view runs all the way around: Babuyan Island, the Dos Hermanas (Two Sisters) islands and Engaño cove. The Philippine Coast Guard now keeps it.

Work started in 1888 and finished in 1892, with mostly Filipino labourers, one of four lighthouses the Spanish built to bring ships in. The octagonal tower is 11 metres tall and holds a copper lantern that now runs on solar power. Beside it stand the old housing pavilion and the service buildings, all of local masonry and hardwood. One family, the Jamorabons, kept the light for generations. Palaui Island belongs to the town of Santa Ana, and people come to its waters to dive, snorkel and fish.
