San Pablo Cathedral

no rating yet ♥ 16

The bishop's church for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Pablo. Its patron is Saint Paul the First Hermit, and his feast falls on January 15.

The present building was started in 1714 and finished in 1721, on foundations laid in 1680. The transept came between 1871 and 1888. Japanese forces held the church as a prison and garrison in the Second World War, and the convent was wrecked in 1945, so parishioners rebuilt it between 1948 and 1954. A restoration in 2015 took the facade back to its old design and removed a concrete crown added in the American period. The choir loft has held a pipe organ by Diego Cera Organbuilders since 2025, with 1,777 pipes and 30 stops, the largest mechanical pipe organ in the country.
