The city's parish church, established in 1792, the same year Santa Rosa became a town in its own right. It is the second oldest parish in the country named for Saint Rose of Lima, who is also the patron of the city.
Spanish friars raised the present building from 1796 with Chinese workers whose descendants, among them the Lijaucos and the Tiongcos, are still local families. The church and its convent were blessed in 1812. Eight bells hang in the tower, from 32 to 85 centimetres across, each one inscribed with its patron saint and the year it was cast. A clock 1.5 metres wide chimes every quarter-hour. Of the ceiling paintings by Mariano Perlas, two survive in the choir loft: King David with his harp and Saint Cecilia at the piano.
