Lucena Cathedral
The seat of the Bishop of Lucena, in the city proper. The cathedral carries the name of Saint Ferdinand III of Castile, a 13th century monarch who reigned in parts of modern-day Spain, so its formal name is Saint Ferdinand Cathedral.
The parish was cut out of Tayabas in 1881 at the urging of Fray Mariano Granja, who paid for the first church from his own savings. That building, half masonry and half wood, went up between 1882 and 1884, took typhoon damage, and burned down in 1887. The present church replaced it in the same year. Granja also left the town a stone courthouse, a stone cemetery, a primary school for boys and girls, a hospital and a college for women. The church became a cathedral when the diocese was created in 1950.
