Banaue Rice Terraces viewpoints
Four roadside decks above the town looking over the terraces, with Ifugao elders in traditional dress. The fields below were cut into the mountains by the ancestors of the Igorot people, by hand and with little equipment, about 1,500 metres above sea level. Water still reaches them through an old irrigation system fed by the rainforest higher up.
Families plant the terraces to this day, with rice and more and more vegetables. Fewer young Ifugao take up farming, and the steps wear down when nobody rebuilds them.
