Namacpacan Church
A church of 1690 in Luna, declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines. Its titular is Saint Catherine of Alexandria. It is also the shrine for the image of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of Namacpacan, and Namacpacan is the name Luna carried before. The white and yellow facade of 1872 has rounded pediments, twin belfries, engaged columns and a ceremonial archway at the entrance, the capilla possa. Thick walls and buttresses make it an Earthquake Baroque church. Inside are a wooden altar, a stone pulpit from the Spanish period and a wood relief of the Baptism of Christ.
The image, called Apo Baket in Ilocano, stands 1.92 metres and is the tallest known Marian image in the country. It came from Spain in 1871 and was crowned in 1959. Ilocano travellers take her as their patroness.
