Northern Kabuntalan was voted into existence on the last day of 2006, eleven barangays taken from Kabuntalan by the regional assembly. Its 30,300 people spent the first year and a half of the town's life inside Shariff Kabunsuan, the province the Supreme Court voided in the middle of 2008.
