Pagalungan gave up a good part of its ground in 2000, when Pagagawan, now called Datu Montawal, was carved out of it. About 21,300 people remain across its twelve barangays in Maguindanao del Sur. The name is written in Jawi script as well as in Maguindanaon and Tagalog.
