Magallanes carries the Hispanised surname of the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan, which is a heavy name for a town of 22,780 people. It was part of Butuan until Republic Act 5660 made it a municipality on June 21, 1969, and it has eight barangays to its name.
