Monfort Bat Sanctuary

A cave 75 metres long holding a colony of 2.3 million Rousette fruit bats. Guinness World Records lists it as the largest single colony of this kind. The bats cover 75 per cent of the ceiling and the walls, and they have used the cave as far back as records go.

The sanctuary is about 1 kilometre east of Davao City, across the water, and the Iñigo-Monfort family has held the land since the 1900s. You look in from outside one of the five entrances, because any disturbance makes the bats panic. Late afternoon is the best time: the bats fly out to feed right after sunset. A visit after 18:00 needs an appointment and takes six people at most.
