Matungao means cold in Maranao. Once a year the town stages the Kapagtota Festival, built around a Maranao courtship dance, and it takes some pride in being a place where Muslim and Christian neighbours have kept the peace. About 16,400 people live here, one of the smallest counts in Lanao del Norte.
