A stone fort from 1756, built by Father José Ducos to hold the coast against pirates who carried people off as slaves, and known locally as the Cotta. It is square, with four bastions and one side facing Panguil Bay, and the walls are blocks of coral and sandstone set in lime. A renovation in 2002 restored the original design.
Inside are a garden and a small museum of pieces from the fort and the city, and a concrete lighthouse 9 metres high stands on the southeast bastion, put up around 1917. An outdoor shrine stands against the south wall, dedicated to the Birhen sa Cotta, the city's patroness. The bas relief of the Virgin there is believed to be miraculous, and pilgrims come to see it. A man destroyed the original in the late 1950s, and the one venerated now is a plaster copy.
