Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary
A quiet forest sanctuary in Corella where tarsiers are viewed at a distance, without flash or noise. An adult is about the size of a human fist, 85 to 160 millimetres tall, and one of the smallest primates. Its eyes are fixed in the skull and have the largest eye-to-body weight ratio of any mammal, so it turns its round head 180 degrees to look around. It is nocturnal and eats insects, and it perches about 2 metres above the ground, from where it can jump at least 3 metres to the next tree.
The Philippine tarsier lives only in this country, mostly on Bohol, Samar and Leyte. Its family, Tarsiidae, is about 45 million years old, and the name comes from the animal's long tarsus, or ankle bone. The species is the only member of the genus Carlito, named after the conservationist Carlito Pizarras.
