Monument

Mactan Shrine

no rating yet ♥ 5

A memorial park on Mactan island, on the ground where the Battle of Mactan was fought in 1521. It holds two monuments: one to Ferdinand Magellan, and a bronze statue of Lapulapu, the native leader who defeated the Spanish landing party. Magellan brought fewer than 50 men ashore, and about 1,500 Mactan warriors met them and killed him, with several others of his expedition. The park is also called Liberty Shrine, and the city takes its name from Lapulapu.
