The largest sugar refinery in the country, and the largest integrated sugar mill in the world. Its compound covers 7,000 hectares, with the Saint Joseph the Worker Chapel standing inside it. The city is 34 kilometres from Bacolod.
Don Miguel Ossorio and his partners set the company up on 7 May 1919, and the mill started work in 1921. It grew into one of the largest makers of raw and refined sugar in Asia and supplied half the country's refined sugar. The company also runs farms, a school, a hospital, a golf club and a railway 180 kilometres long. Its businesses helped raise the municipality to a city, which one scholar called the city that sugar built. Every December the city holds the Kalamayan Festival, started in 2014 and named after kalamay, the Cebuano word for sugar.
