The highest peak in the whole Visayas at 2,465 metres, and the high point of Negros Island and of Negros Oriental. The city sits below it and takes its name from it.
Kanlaon means the place of Laon, a pre-colonial Visayan goddess of creation, agriculture and justice. Laon itself means the ancient one. The city stands on the lower slope, about 8.5 kilometres east-southeast of the summit. This is an active andesitic stratovolcano and the most active volcano in the Visayas, with more than 40 eruptions since 1819. Most are steam blasts that drop a little ash nearby, though the eruption of 1902 threw out glowing cinders and lava bombs. The cone is 30 kilometres wide at the base, with smaller cones and dead craters along its north-northwest side.
