Daraga Church
A volcanic-stone baroque church on a hill, finished in 1773, with Mayon behind it. Its full name is Our Lady of the Gate Parish Church, after the patroness the Franciscan builders chose. The parish belongs to the Diocese of Legazpi.
The Churrigueresque facade has four spiral Solomonic columns, each with a round medallion of one of the four Evangelists. Carved on the front and the belfry are saints, most of them Franciscan, the arms of the Franciscan order, the Pope's tiara with the keys and the five wounds of Saint Francis. A Latin line over the door reads "Bene fundata est domus Domini supra firmam petram" (Well founded is the house of the Lord on firm rock). The octagonal belltower on the left carries the twelve apostles around its base. The National Museum listed the eastern and western facades, the belfry and the baptistry as a National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines in 2007.
