The seat of the Archdiocese of Caceres, dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist. The first church here followed the creation of the diocese of Nueva Caceres in 1595, and fire destroyed it in 1768.

Work on the present building started in 1808 in Spanish Romanesque Revival style, and it was completed and consecrated in 1843. The squat front, in the Earthquake Baroque manner, has a high arched door between twin pilasters, two short hexagonal belfries and the coat of arms of Castile and Leon. Inside, heavy arches and columns brace the nave and the aisles against earthquakes, the columns and ceilings carry trompe-l'oeil paintings, and both sides have stained glass. During the Peñafrancia feast the image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia stays here for nine days of novena prayer.
