Mount Batulao
An inactive stratovolcano of jagged peaks, rugged ridges and deep gorges in northwest Batangas, on the border with Cavite. It is a flank cone on the northwestern rim of Taal, and it began to form about 3.4 million years ago. It rises to 693 metres and has twelve peaks, most of them inside Nasugbu. The name comes from bato sa ilaw, or illuminated rocks: in December the sun rises between the two highest peaks and lights them up.
People come for the scenery of the ridges, and the climb suits beginners. There are at least ten camp sites and a stall selling buco juice where two trails meet. The east route, also called the Old Trail, is the longer and harder way up, and it starts from the Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway. Retreat centres and resorts sit around the mountain, 85 kilometres south of Manila and just west of Tagaytay.
