Rizal Shrine
The house where Jose Rizal was born on June 19, 1861, rebuilt as a two-storey bahay na bato. What stands today is a reproduction of the original. Filipino schoolchildren paid for most of the work, Juan F. Nakpil supervised it, and the house opened again on June 19, 1950. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines lists it as a National Shrine.
The ground floor, once a stable, now shows copies of Rizal's writings, drawings and baptismal certificate. Upstairs are the family rooms, a library that held more than a thousand books, and the four-poster bed where he was born. An old well from the first house survives, and the lawn has a replica nipa hut with a statue of the boy and his dog. His parents are buried on the grounds. It sits along Mercado Street and Rizal Street in Poblacion 5, close to the church where Rizal was baptised and to the City College of Calamba.
