Mount Banahaw
The highest mountain in Laguna, in Quezon and in the whole Calabarzon region: an active volcano with three peaks that dominates the landscape for miles around. The summit reaches 2,170 metres and holds a caldera 210 metres deep, broken open on its southern side by the eruption of 1730. Many people hold it to be a holy mountain, a bundok dambana, so pilgrims climb it alongside mountaineers.
Springs, caves and boulders on the slopes are called puestos, holy sites, and their water is treated as holy water. Trails climb from Dolores and Sariaya to viewpoints named Durungawan I, II and III on the caldera rim. Litter closed the mountain in 2004. Parts of it reopened in 2019 and open by season, but most sections stay shut. It stands inside the Mounts Banahaw-San Cristobal Protected Landscape, a protected area of 10,901 hectares.
