Angono Petroglyphs
Carvings of 127 human and animal figures, cut into a rock wall on the boundary between Angono and Binangonan. They are the oldest known work of art in the country, probably carved in the Late Neolithic, before 2000 BC.
The figures are stylized: people, frogs and lizards, with other shapes that erosion has worn past recognition. The engravings are symbolic and are linked to healing and sympathetic magic. The National Museum of the Philippines declared the site a National Cultural Treasure in 1973. It entered the World Inventory of Rock Art in 1985 and sits on the country's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage.
