Mount Samat National Shrine
A war memorial near the summit of Mount Samat, built for the Filipino and American soldiers who fought the Imperial Japanese Army in the Battle of Bataan. It has a marble colonnade and a white Memorial Cross, 555 metres above sea level. President Ferdinand Marcos commissioned it in 1966, to mark the 25th anniversary of the war.
A museum in the complex holds paintings of Philippine heroes and the weapons used by Filipino, American and Japanese forces. From the colonnade and the cross you see Bataan, the island of Corregidor and, on a clear day, Manila about 50 kilometres across the bay.
