Mount Pinatubo
An active volcano at the point where Zambales, Tarlac and Pampanga meet, known for its eruption of June 15, 1991. That eruption was the second largest on land in the 20th century, after Novarupta in Alaska in 1912. Typhoon Yunya made landfall on the same day and brought a mix of ash and rain down on the towns nearby.
Forecasts made before the eruption moved tens of thousands of people out and saved many lives. Pyroclastic surges and, later, lahars of rainwater and loose volcanic deposits damaged the area and altered the river systems for years. Dense forest once covered the slopes and supported several thousand Aeta people. Small eruptions inside the caldera continued until 1993.
