Alaminos Cathedral

no rating yet ♥ 27

The seat of the Catholic Diocese of Alaminos since 1985, in Barangay Poblacion. It is dedicated to Saint Joseph the Patriarch. Fire destroyed two earlier churches on this site, the second one in 1834. Maestro Cenon, who also designed the church of Aguilar, drew the plan for the replacement, and the whole town was told to help build it. It opened in 1857 with stone walls, a nipa roof and a niche for Saint Joseph.

Later parish priests added most of what a visitor now sees: a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus from 1930, large Stations of the Cross by a local artist, a belfry remade in concrete, and a grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes whose image was carved by Mariano Madriaga, archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan. Marble went on the altar and floor after the church became a cathedral.
