Minor Basilica of Saint Dominic
A minor basilica of brick, finished in 1773 under Father Cristobal Ausina. It was the largest Catholic church in the country in the late 18th century. The interior runs 89 metres to the chancel, almost 20 metres wide and 16.5 metres high, so high that the walls carry two rows of windows, one above the other. Three earthquakes then wrecked it, in 1789, in 1796 and in 1799, and the facade and walls were strengthened in 1802.
Fire had taken the earlier church twice before that, during the uprising of Juan Caragay in 1718 and again during the revolt of Juan dela Cruz Palaris in 1763. The town was called Binalatongan then. It moved to the present site and took the name San Carlos in 1764, by order of Charles III of Spain.
