La Loma Cemetery

no rating yet ♥ 2

The oldest cemetery in Manila, opened in 1884 as a Catholic burial ground and lying mostly inside Caloocan, with its southern part across the line in the city of Manila. The city government counts it among its sites of historical importance.

The grounds cover slightly less than 54 hectares and first carried the name Cementerio de Binondo. The chapel was the focal point of the Battle of Caloocan in the Philippine-American War: American forces under Arthur MacArthur held it while Antonio Luna's men held the northern end. An anti-aircraft mortar launcher still stands on the grounds. The cemetery came through the 1945 Battle of Manila intact, when most of the city's old architecture did not. Cayetano Arellano, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, lies in his own mausoleum here, and Josefa Llanes Escoda, who founded the Girl Scouts of the Philippines, lies in an unmarked grave.
