Caloocan Cathedral
The seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kalookan, dedicated to Saint Roch, who is known here as San Roque. It stands near the corner of 10th Avenue and A. Mabini Street in Poblacion, a short walk from the old town centre. Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, the bishop of Kalookan, is its parish priest.
The parish began in 1765 as a chapel of ease and moved to this hill, then called Paltok, when it became a parish in 1815. The present church was begun in 1819 and finished in 1847. Katipuneros walking from the west coast of Manila to Balintawak met here, and American troops partly destroyed the building in February 1899 after Antonio Luna took refuge in it. The cathedral keeps two bone relics of San Roque. The first came from Pope Francis for the parish's 200th anniversary and was set into the altar table at the dedication in December 2015.
