Saint Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral
The seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro, dedicated to Saint Augustine, Bishop of Hippo. Augustine is also the city's patron saint, and each barangay in the city keeps its own fiesta as well, for its own patron saint. The building you see is Neo-Gothic and went up after the war, because bombing in 1942 destroyed the old church and its records.
The first church on this ground was built in 1624 by the Order of Augustinian Recollects under Father Agustín de San Pedro, who had the settlement moved here from Himologan because the new site was easier to defend from pirates. Fire took the church in a revolt in 1649, again in 1778 and again in 1831. Father Simón Loscos began the stone church in 1841 and the work ran from 1843 to 1851.
