Sunken Cemetery
A cemetery under the sea off Catarman, which went down when Mount Vulcan erupted on 1 May 1871. The graves belonged to the old settlement of Bonbon. A white concrete cross, put up by the provincial government in 1982, marks the place from the surface, and the tombs lie as deep as 6.1 metres. Coral now covers the tombstones, so snorkelers and divers go down to see them, and part of the site shows at low tide.
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts has declared it a National Cultural Treasure for its historical, cultural, artistic and scientific value. It is one of three such treasures on the island. The other two are the Old Bonbon Church ruins, also in Catarman, and the Spanish-era watchtower in Guinsiliban.
