Carbon Market
The city's oldest and largest public market, busiest before dawn. About 6,000 vendors work in it. The dry stalls sell clothing, kitchenware and handicrafts, and the wet stalls sell fruit, vegetables and meat. Roving vendors and cooked-food stalls fill the streets around it, along F. Calderon, Manalili, Plaridel, F. Gonzales and Lincoln. The name comes from carbón, Spanish for coal: a depot for the coal-burning ships and trains of the old Cebu Railway stood nearby.
The market is being redeveloped. Three new public market buildings are planned, and the first is due to be finished by December 2026. The restored Freedom Park, an interim market building and The Barracks hawker centre are already done. Since 2023 cars cannot enter M.C. Briones, F. Calderon and Manalili streets between six in the evening and six in the morning.
