Olango Island
An island 5 kilometres east of Mactan, known for its wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary covers 920 hectares of tidal flat at the centre of the island group and holds the largest concentration of migratory birds recorded in the Philippines. The birds come from Siberia, northern China and Japan on the way to Australia and New Zealand. Of the 97 bird species here, 48 are migrants, among them Chinese egrets, Asiatic dowitchers, eastern curlews and black-tailed godwits. July to November is the time to see them. Olango also has three dive sites and the widest mangroves in Cebu province.
The whole group was named the first Ramsar wetland site in the Philippines in 1994. It covers about 1,030 hectares, made up of Olango and six smaller islets, and it is split between Lapu-Lapu City and the town of Cordova.
